Owl Class Work Plan
Welcome back! I hope you all had a great Easter holiday. Thank you for all your support last term and well done to all the children for working so hard.
I will continue to teach Owl Class from Monday to Thursday and Mrs Terndrup will teach the class on Friday. Mrs Fitch, Mrs Gerry and Mrs Homer will support the class. Our topics this term are ‘Sea, Seaside Holidays and Pirates’ and the attached topic web gives further details of the areas we will be studying and the activities planned. We plan to have a Pirate day later in the term to coincide with the Pirate Day lunch in May.
During the term we will be introducing the Accelerated Reading Program for Year 2 children. Children will be able to choose their own books from an appropriate range of books. When they finish a book they take a quiz to check their understanding. Please see the ‘Parent Guide to Accelerated Reader’ on the school website for further details.
Each day there will be a ‘Letters and Sounds’ session, focusing on phonics, grammar and spelling strategies. We will continue to use the ‘Penpals’ handwriting scheme and all Year 2 children should be trying to join their letters. Some Year 1 children will also be encouraged to start joining their handwriting.
In Mathematics I will continue to teach Year 1 and Mrs Townend will continue to teach Year 2. We continue to follow the exciting, but challenging, ‘Maths No Problem’ scheme. Please see the attached topic web for the main focus areas in Mathematics.
PE will be on Monday and Tuesday. Please ensure that your child always has their named PE kit in school, including the correct footwear, spare socks if required, and a tracksuit for any colder weather. This term we will be working on gymnastics and preparing for sports day.
Philosophy for Children
We are continuing to introduce ‘Philosophy for Children’. These sessions allow children to explore ideas, have the confidence to ask questions and learn through discussion and realise ‘there isn’t always a right answer!’
Homework will be set on Friday and should be returned by the following Friday. Sometimes homework will be a practical activity or game that does not need to be returned to school. Children can also access the Mathletics website. Please see me if you need a reminder of your child’s password.
At the end of May the Year 2 children will complete their Sats tests in reading and maths. These tests will be used to help to decide each child’s teacher assessment level for Year 2. The teacher assessments levels will be included in your child’s end of year report.
All Year 1 children will complete a phonic screening check in June to assess their decoding skills, if you would like to further support and prepare your child at home this website is useful in producing the types of word lists the children will be expected to decode during the check:
